Workshop: Intro to Woodcut Printmaking

November 4, 2017 12 pm – 4 pm
Two Hands Paperie
Register at the store or online
803 Pearl St. Boulder, CO 80302

Woodcut printmaking is the oldest known printing method. The process is straightforward – prepare an image on a flat piece of wood and cut away unwanted areas by hand with carving gouges. It’s possible, however, to create complex and highly detailed prints with the one technique. This class is a perfect introduction to the basics of the art. Local print maker Theresa Haberkorn will show you how to plan and transfer an image to wood, then she’ll demonstrate carving techniques. Once you’re finished carving, all that’s left is inking and printing the block to complete your single-color print. No presses are needed!

Printing on Fabric, Pattern Class

November 17, 2017 1 – 4 pm

803 Pearl St. Boulder, CO 80302

When local printmaker Theresa Haberkorn suggested a class on carving rubber stamps and then using the images to create a pattern, we were delighted. We were even more delighted to hear that the class would include decorating a tea towel. Making the stamps is easy. Theresa will show you basic carving techniques and cover important considerations for developing a successful pattern. The focus is on simple forms. Positive and negative space, types of repeats, and color choice are all considerations. Once you’ve finished carving, playing around with the stamped image as you work out a pattern is just plain fun. Rotating the stamp or overlapping images are simple techniques for creating a design with visual rhythm and movement. Stamping in a spiral, wave, or meander pattern adds an additional dimension. So many options! Experimentation is encouraged. Paper will be available to test out your pattern ideas before stamping on the tea towel. We think you’ll be wonderfully surprised at what you can make from simple stamps!
